SimpliSafe Home Security Review 2026
A complete hands-on review of the SimpliSafe home security system. I cover the equipment, cameras, sensors, pricing, monitoring plans, and whether it's actually worth your money.

My full SimpliSafe system: base station, keypad, cameras, sensors, and door lock.
I’ve had the SimpliSafe home security system installed in my house for a while now, and I’ve been running it through every test I can think of. This is my full, honest SimpliSafe review.
I’ll cover the equipment, cameras, sensors, the DIY installation process, monitoring plans, pricing, and all the things I think you should know before buying. If you’ve been reading SimpliSafe security reviews trying to figure out if this system is worth your money, this should help you decide.
Here’s the short version: SimpliSafe is a solid home security system with one standout feature (Active Guard) that no other company really matches. But it’s not the budget option it used to be, and there are some trade-offs you should know about.
Pros and Cons
Here’s a quick overview of where SimpliSafe lands after my testing.
Pros
- Active Guard live video monitoring is unique in the industry
- Easy DIY installation with refined setup process
- No contract, month-to-month service
- Free monitoring plan available with basic app control
- Cellular backup keeps monitoring active when Wi-Fi is down
Cons
- No touchscreen keypad (basic push-button style)
- Cameras are proprietary (stop working if you cancel)
- Limited smart home and home automation features
- No 24/7 continuous recording (clips only)
- Monthly cost has increased significantly (no longer the budget option)
- Can't use existing hardwired sensors
What is SimpliSafe?
SimpliSafe is a DIY home security system that you order online, ship to your door, and install yourself. The system is monitored 24/7 for police, fire, and medical through your Wi-Fi connection with a cellular backup. So if your power goes out and your Wi-Fi drops, the system still has monitoring through that cellular connection.
SimpliSafe was one of the first companies to really push the DIY home security model, and they’ve been refining it for years. They’re also one of the few security companies that lets you use the system with no monthly fee at all, though you’ll want a paid plan to get the most out of it.
The thing that separates SimpliSafe from every other security system I’ve tested is Active Guard. It’s a live video monitoring feature where real agents at the monitoring center watch your outdoor cameras and can intervene if they see something suspicious. More on that later because it’s the main reason you’d pick SimpliSafe over something like Cove or Ring.
SimpliSafe Equipment and Installation

My system came with the base station, keypad, entry sensors for doors and windows, a motion sensor, glass break sensor, three cameras (indoor, outdoor, and doorbell), and the automatic door lock. SimpliSafe sells several pre-built packages starting at $250.96, or you can build your own system from scratch.
| Package | What’s included | Price |
|---|---|---|
| The Foundation | Base station, keypad, 1 entry sensor, 1 motion sensor | $250.96 |
| The Essentials | Base station, keypad, 3 entry sensors, 1 motion sensor | $279.95 |
| The Hearth | Base station, keypad, 3 entry sensors, 1 motion sensor, key fob, siren, smoke detector | $412.91 |
| The Knox | Base station, keypad, 6 entry sensors, 2 motion sensors, key fob, siren, smoke detector | $495.87 |
| The Haven | Base station, keypad, 4 entry sensors, 2 motion sensors, panic button, temp sensor, water sensor, key fob, siren, smoke detector | $533.86 |
| The Beacon | Base station, keypad, 2 outdoor cameras, 4 entry sensors, 2 motion sensors | $733.90 |
| Build Your Own | Base station + keypad (add what you want) | $199.98 |
My total equipment cost was a little over $900 for everything. I was able to get 50% off at the time, so I only paid $519. SimpliSafe runs discounts pretty regularly, sometimes up to 50% off plus free cameras. So don’t pay full price if you can help it.

The app walks you through the entire setup process step by step.
This is a DIY system, so you’re installing everything yourself. And honestly, SimpliSafe makes it about as easy as it gets. You plug in the base station, download the app, and connect the two. Then you sync up the sensors, cameras, and door lock one by one through the app. Set up your PIN codes for the keypad and you’re done.

The base station runs a firmware update during initial setup.
The whole process took me about an hour and a half to two hours. I didn’t run into any real hiccups connecting the cameras or sensors to the app. SimpliSafe has been doing the DIY thing longer than almost anyone, and you can tell the process is refined.
The sensors use adhesive strips, so you peel off the backing and stick them where you want. No drilling, no tools needed. That also makes this a decent option for renters.

Entry sensors peel and stick right onto the door frame.
SimpliSafe also offers professional installation starting at $124.99 if you’d rather not do it yourself. That price goes up based on how many devices you need installed. The doorbell camera in particular requires hardwiring to your existing doorbell system, so that one might be worth having a pro handle.
> > SimpliSafe Promo: 20% OFF Equipment + Free Indoor CameraThe Base Station

The base station is the brains of the operation. It connects everything together.
The base station is the central hub that connects all your sensors, cameras, and devices together. It also communicates with SimpliSafe’s monitoring center and has a built-in siren that goes off when the alarm triggers.
It comes with a 24-hour battery backup, so the system stays powered during outages. The cellular backup keeps monitoring active even when your internet goes down. That combination means you’re covered even in a worst-case scenario.
The design is actually pretty nice. It’s a tower-like shape that doesn’t take up much space. It has a blue underglow at night, which is a subtle visual reminder that the system is active. I keep mine in the living room and it doubles as a night light.
One thing to know: the base station siren is loud, but it gets harder to hear from other floors or if you have the TV on. If that concerns you, SimpliSafe sells an extra 105dB siren that you can place in a different part of the house. I’d recommend picking one up if you have a two-story home.
The Keypad

The keypad is functional but basic. No touchscreen here.
Here’s where I have a real gripe with SimpliSafe. The keypad is a traditional push-button style. No touchscreen. If you’ve watched any of my other reviews, you know I’m a fan of the modern touchscreen panels that Vivint, ADT, and even Cove offer. A touchscreen makes it so much easier to change settings, update PIN codes, and view your cameras right from the panel.
SimpliSafe’s keypad gets the job done. You can arm and disarm the system, enter PIN codes, and hit the panic button. But that’s about it. You can’t view camera feeds, adjust sensor settings, or do much else from the keypad itself. For any of that, you need the app.

The base station and keypad are the foundation of every SimpliSafe system.
The other thing missing is two-way voice through the panel. With other systems, if someone breaks in, the monitoring station can communicate with you directly through the panel. SimpliSafe doesn’t have that. Your communication options are through the phone app or the camera speakers if you have cameras set up.
For a system at this price point, I was hoping for more from the keypad. It’s one of the biggest areas where SimpliSafe falls behind the competition.
SimpliSafe Sensors

Pulling the battery tab activates the sensor. Simple as that.
My system came with entry sensors (for doors and windows), a motion sensor, and a glass break sensor. They all connect wirelessly to the base station.
The entry sensors are small and blend in well. They trigger an alert within seconds of a door or window opening. I didn’t have any issues with reliability during my testing.
The motion sensor detected the right things. It has a 35-foot detection range and a pet-friendly mode so your cat or dog won’t set it off. I’d recommend placing it in the corner of a room for maximum coverage and mounting it at least six feet off the ground.
The glass break sensor listens for the frequency of breaking glass and triggers the alarm. During my testing it worked when I needed it to.
SimpliSafe also offers water sensors, smoke and CO detectors, temperature sensors, and a panic button as add-ons. All of those integrate into the system through the app.
One important con here: SimpliSafe only works with its own wireless sensors. If you moved into a house that already has a hardwired alarm system, you can’t use those existing sensors with SimpliSafe. You’ll need to buy all new SimpliSafe sensors for every door and window. That adds to the upfront cost.
SimpliSafe Cameras
SimpliSafe offers three cameras: an indoor camera, an outdoor camera, and a doorbell camera. All three came with my system, so I’ve had plenty of time to test them.
| Feature | Indoor Camera | Outdoor Camera | Doorbell Camera |
|---|---|---|---|
| Video quality | 1536p | 1080p | 1080p |
| Night vision | Yes | Yes (color with spotlight) | Yes |
| Two-way talk | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Field of view | Wide angle | 140 degrees | 162 degrees |
| Power source | Battery/wired | Battery | Hardwired |
| Motion detection | Yes (AI) | Yes (AI) | Yes (AI with person detection) |
| Local storage | No | No | No |
| Cloud storage | 30 days (paid plan) | 30 days (paid plan) | 30 days (paid plan) |
Indoor Camera

The indoor camera records at 1536p, which is a step above most competitors.
The Wireless Indoor Camera records at 1536p resolution, which is almost 2K quality. That’s better than the 1080p you see from most security cameras. In practice, the difference is noticeable. I could read labels on packages from across the room.

Pairing the indoor camera through the app was straightforward.
The camera has a physical privacy shutter that stays closed when the system isn’t triggered. When an alarm goes off, the shutter opens automatically. This is a nice touch for privacy. You can also adjust the settings to customize when it sends alerts and live feeds to the monitoring center.
The big feature here is Intruder Intervention (available on the Core plan and above). If the system detects a break-in, a live agent at SimpliSafe’s monitoring center can access the camera feed, use the two-way speaker to warn the intruder, and dispatch police. During testing, I triggered a simulated break-in and an agent was communicating through the camera in under 45 seconds. That’s fast.
Outdoor Camera

The outdoor camera captures clear footage during the day.
The outdoor camera records at 1080p with a 140-degree field of view. It has a built-in spotlight and color night vision, so you get full-color footage even in the dark when the light kicks on. The spotlight is motion-activated.

Night vision footage with the spotlight active. Clear enough to make out faces.
This is the camera that works with Active Guard Outdoor Protection, which is SimpliSafe’s biggest differentiator. The camera uses AI to detect when someone approaches your property. If it identifies a stranger, it alerts SimpliSafe’s monitoring center. A live agent can then use the camera’s two-way talk, siren, and spotlight to deter the person in real time.
That proactive approach is the main reason to pick SimpliSafe. Instead of just recording a break-in and dealing with it after the fact, you have someone watching and intervening before it happens.
Doorbell Camera

The doorbell camera requires hardwiring to your existing doorbell system.
The Video Doorbell Pro records at 1080p with a 162-degree field of view, HDR, and person detection. The HDR helps with outdoor lighting so you don’t get washed-out footage on bright days.

Daytime footage from the doorbell. Wide angle catches most of the front area.

Night vision on the doorbell camera. Black and white but clear enough to see details.
The one catch is that the doorbell camera requires hardwiring to your existing doorbell and chime system. You can’t run it on battery. If you don’t have existing doorbell wiring, you’ll need to hire an electrician or skip this camera. That’s a more invasive installation than the rest of the system.
The Video Doorbell Pro is actually the only SimpliSafe device that works as a standalone product without a base station. But I tested it as part of the full system.
Camera Pros and Cons
Pros
- Active Guard gives you proactive live monitoring (unique in the industry)
- Indoor camera records at 1536p, better than most competitors
- All cameras have night vision, motion detection, and two-way talk
- Privacy shutter on the indoor camera is a nice touch for daily use
Cons
- Only records video clips, no 24/7 continuous recording option
- Cameras are proprietary. If you cancel SimpliSafe, the cameras stop working
- Cameras are heavily dependent on Wi-Fi. No Wi-Fi means no video at all
- No local storage option. Cloud storage only
That last con is a big one. The cameras are locked to SimpliSafe’s service. If you ever cancel your monitoring plan, you lose the camera functionality entirely. You can’t move them to another app or service. Compare that to Cove, which uses Eufy cameras that you can keep using even after you cancel. Something to think about if you’re not sure you want to commit long-term.
The SimpliSafe Mobile App

The main dashboard gives you quick access to arm/disarm, cameras, and alerts.
The SimpliSafe app is where you’ll spend most of your time managing the system. You can arm and disarm remotely, watch live camera feeds, view recordings, get alerts, and adjust sensor settings. It’s a free download and works with every plan, including the free tier.

All your camera feeds in one place. Tap to go live on any of them.
The app is mostly intuitive. I didn’t have trouble finding things. You can customize notification settings, set up scheduled arming (arm the system automatically at 8 PM every night, for example), and manage all your devices from one screen.

Pulling up the live view from the doorbell camera through the app.

There are a lot of settings and options, which is good from a customization perspective but can feel like a lot if you have multiple devices. You’ll want to spend some time going through the settings when you first set up.
The app has strong ratings: 4.8 on iOS and 4.5 on Android. That tracks with my experience. It’s a solid app that does what it needs to do.

Motion event history for the doorbell camera. You can scroll through clips and watch them back.
Home Automation (Not Much to Talk About)
SimpliSafe’s home automation is limited. That’s putting it politely.
The only smart home device that works with the SimpliSafe system is their own door lock. That’s it. No Nest thermostats, no Z-Wave light switches, no garage door controllers, nothing like what you’d get with Vivint or ADT.
The door lock itself is fine. It was easy to sync up and connects to your existing deadbolt, so you don’t have to re-key anything. You can lock and unlock from the app or set up a code on the keypad that mounts outside. You can also set up some basic automations, like automatically locking the door when you arm the system.
SimpliSafe does work with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant for voice commands. You can arm the system and check its status using voice, but you can’t disarm with voice for security reasons. Beyond that, the smart home integration stops there.
If you want a home security system that also controls your smart home (locks, lights, thermostat, the whole thing), SimpliSafe is not the right choice. Look at ADT or Vivint for that. But if you just want home security and you’re fine controlling other smart devices separately, this won’t be an issue.
SimpliSafe Monitoring Plans and Pricing
This is where things get interesting, and honestly a little frustrating. SimpliSafe used to be known as the most affordable home security system on the market. The monitoring used to cost around $15 to $20 per month. That’s no longer the case.
Monitoring Plans
SimpliSafe offers six tiers, including a free option:
| Plan | Monthly cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| No plan (free) | $0 | Arm/disarm from app, live camera views |
| Self-Monitoring with Camera Recordings | $9.99 | 30-day video history, app/text/email alerts, scheduled arming |
| Standard Monitoring | $22.99 | 24/7 emergency dispatch, cellular backup, text/app alerts |
| Core | $32.99 | Everything in Standard + camera cloud storage, Intruder Intervention, video verification, smart home integration, lifetime warranty |
| Pro | $49.99 | Everything in Core + Active Guard Outdoor Protection (8 PM to 6 AM) |
| Pro Plus | $79.99 | Everything in Core + 24/7 Active Guard Outdoor Protection |
The free plan is actually more useful than what most competitors offer at no cost. You can still arm and disarm through the app and pull up live camera views. You just won’t have professional monitoring, cellular backup, or video recording.
The Core plan at $32.99 per month is what I’d consider the sweet spot for most people. You get 24/7 monitoring, camera cloud storage, Intruder Intervention, video verification, and a lifetime warranty on all equipment. That’s the plan I’d recommend if you’re not interested in Active Guard.
If you want Active Guard, you’re looking at $49.99 per month for overnight coverage (8 PM to 6 AM) or $79.99 for 24/7 coverage. That’s a real jump in price. But no other security company offers anything quite like it at this price point. Ring’s Virtual Security Guard runs $99 per month for comparison.
No Contract
SimpliSafe is month-to-month. No contract, no cancellation fees. You can cancel whenever you want. That’s a big plus, especially compared to ADT and Vivint which have historically pushed long-term contracts (though both have moved toward more flexible options recently).
You also get a 60-day trial period. If you’re not happy, return the equipment within 60 days for a full refund. That only applies to equipment bought directly from SimpliSafe.
Warranty
All SimpliSafe equipment comes with a one-year limited warranty. If you subscribe to the Standard or Self-Monitoring plans, the warranty extends to three years. The Core, Pro, and Pro Plus plans include a lifetime warranty, which is hard to beat.

How Does SimpliSafe Work?
For anyone wondering about the day-to-day experience: you arm the system when you leave (either from the keypad or the app), and it monitors all your sensors and cameras. If a sensor triggers, the base station siren goes off, you get a notification on your phone, and SimpliSafe’s monitoring center gets alerted (if you have a monitoring plan).
SimpliSafe has two arming modes. Home mode arms the entry sensors but keeps the motion sensors off, so you can walk around your house without triggering the alarm. Away mode arms everything.

Checking the system from the backyard. Everything is managed through the app.
If an alarm triggers and you have the Core plan or above, SimpliSafe’s monitoring team will access your camera feeds briefly to verify whether it’s a real threat or a false alarm. This is video verification, and it actually speeds up police response because verified alarms get priority over unverified ones.
The system works over Wi-Fi with cellular backup. No landline needed. The base station has a 24-hour battery backup, so even during a power outage, your system stays active.
Is SimpliSafe Worth It?
Here’s where I land on this. SimpliSafe isn’t a bad system. The equipment is solid, the DIY installation is genuinely easy, and Active Guard is a feature I haven’t seen done this well by anyone else at a comparable price.
But SimpliSafe isn’t the budget king it used to be. At $32.99 per month for the Core plan, you’re paying the same as some competitors that give you more features. The lack of a touchscreen keypad, limited smart home integration, and proprietary cameras are real drawbacks that other systems at this price point have solved.
My recommendation comes down to what you want:
- If you want Active Guard and the idea of someone proactively watching your cameras appeals to you, SimpliSafe is the pick. Nobody else does it at this price.
- If you just want standard monitoring with good equipment and don’t care about Active Guard, take a look at Cove. Same price, better panel, cameras you actually own.
- If you want the full smart home experience with locks, lights, thermostat control, and professional installation, look at ADT or Vivint.
SimpliSafe does what it does well. Just make sure what it does is what you actually need.
SimpliSafe Frequently Asked Questions
How much does SimpliSafe cost per month?
SimpliSafe monitoring ranges from free to $79.99 per month. The free plan lets you arm/disarm from the app and view live camera feeds. The Core plan at $32.99 per month is the most popular option and includes 24/7 monitoring, camera cloud storage, and Intruder Intervention. Active Guard starts at $49.99 per month.
Does SimpliSafe require a contract?
No. SimpliSafe is month-to-month with no contract. You can cancel at any time with no penalty. They offer a 60-day trial period for equipment purchased directly from SimpliSafe.
Is SimpliSafe easy to install?
Yes. The entire setup took me about an hour and a half to two hours. Sensors use adhesive strips (no drilling). The app walks you through every step. The only tricky part is the doorbell camera, which requires hardwiring. SimpliSafe also offers professional installation starting at $124.99.
Does SimpliSafe work without Wi-Fi?
The security system (sensors, base station, monitoring) works without Wi-Fi thanks to the cellular backup, as long as you have a monitoring plan that includes cellular connection (Standard and above). However, the cameras require Wi-Fi. No Wi-Fi means no video recording, no live streaming, and no camera alerts.
Does SimpliSafe call the police?
Yes, if you have a professional monitoring plan (Standard, Core, Pro, or Pro Plus). When the alarm triggers, SimpliSafe's monitoring center will attempt to verify the alarm and dispatch police, fire, or medical services as needed. On Core and above, they can also verify through your camera feeds.
Can I use SimpliSafe in an apartment?
Yes. SimpliSafe is renter-friendly. Everything is wireless and mounts with adhesive strips. No drilling required. The month-to-month service means you're not locked into a contract if your lease ends. You can take the system with you when you move.
What is Active Guard?
Active Guard is SimpliSafe's live video monitoring feature. When your outdoor cameras detect suspicious activity, a live agent at SimpliSafe's monitoring center can view the feed, speak to the person through the camera, trigger the siren and spotlight, and dispatch police. It's available on the Pro plan ($49.99/mo for 8 PM to 6 AM coverage) and Pro Plus plan ($79.99/mo for 24/7 coverage).
Does SimpliSafe work with Alexa or Google Assistant?
Yes. SimpliSafe integrates with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. You can use voice commands to arm the system and check its status. You cannot disarm with voice for security reasons. Beyond voice control, SimpliSafe's smart home integration is limited. It works with August Locks but not with most other smart home devices.
What happens to SimpliSafe cameras if I cancel?
The cameras stop working. SimpliSafe cameras are proprietary to the system. If you cancel your monitoring service, you lose video recording, live streaming, and all camera features. You can't port them to another app or service.
